Airports, Cape Town, and Table Mountain

I suppose I am going to jump around in these stories. I originally meant this post to be about when I first set foot in South Africa. My Facebook memories feed made me change my mind.

I have always been an airplane buff. I've never had much of a desire to fly them myself, but enjoy being in the back of big ones. Not really a fan of little planes as I tend to get sick in them. Most of the times I had the compunction to fly in a small one I have regretted it almost as soon as the wheels have left the ground.

I am at the Indianapolis Airport preparing to fly home today after two weeks of work away from home. Interestingly in 2014 on this day I was in airports too. I was returning from a four day trip to Cape Town. That was an amazing trip. We went to Table Mountain, The Cape of Good Hope, and saw Robben Island, the prison where Mandela was held.

When I was planning the trip, I was unable to get affordable flights from JoBurg. We ended up flying out of Lansaria airport which is on the west side of Joburg and is where the wealthy keep their planes and travel by charter. Unfortunately a hubcap was stolen from my rental car while it was sitting at Lansaria Airport. I ended up getting charged $150 for that. That was a VW Polo, the rental car guy got us a Toyota Corolla to replace the small car with.

One of the places we went to in Cape Town was the Victoria and Albert Waterfront. Cape Town was part of the British Cape Colony so there are a lot of British things there. The V&A Waterfront is a very vibrant cosmopolitan place and is almost like a different country compared to what we experienced in Lephalale. I heard quite a few American voices in the restaurants there. The staff seemed empowered to do what needed to be done compared to the way things were done in more rural areas.

One of the cool things about the V&A Waterfront was the buskers. There were lots of street performers at all times of the day. I have always enjoyed street performers because I believe they do it because they love performing and want to entertain. I think they put more heart and soul into it than other wealthier entertainers.
