Holy Moly I'm Going to South Africa
I have to admit I had a lot of fear and trepidation about the prospect of going to South Africa. When you research the country you find out that South Africa was shaped by war and violence and there is still quite a bit of violence to this day. Private security is the largest industry in South Africa.
My last day for my old job was 3 July 2013. The fourth was a holiday, and I took Friday the fifth off as a vacation day. On the third, I stayed late and went around to say goodbye to the various people I knew. A group of guys insisted I take a picture with them to show the Africans that I was a good guy.
My late mother's birthday was 6 July so Independence Day always included celebrating her birthday. On the fourth I headed to my parents house to stay with them for a few days and celebrate my mother's birthday before I left on the big adventure. My cousin Sharon brought a cake celebrating the two events.
My start date with the new company was 8 July 2013. So after spending a few days with family it was time to get to work. I flew up to the headquarters on 7 July 2013 so I could be in the office first thing Monday morning. 8 July was also the day the majority of the team was heading to South Africa to start the project. The plan was for me to follow at the end of July. At some point during the July 4th holiday, my boss was at one of those trampoline places with his kids and he severely injured his knees. He ended up recuperating for a few months. If I remember, he finally came to South Africa sometime in October of 2013.
While the rest of the crew was heading to South Africa, I was at headquarters to do the new employee stuff and get my laptop. The people I met there were surprisingly helpful. One woman offered to bring back lunch. Another co-worker came to me to say I should come to his desk so he could show me how to do the time sheets and expense reports.
I was there for a day and a half, then it was back home to get the proper shots, arrange travel, and prepare the house to leave. While home and before I left for South Africa, I also had to do all of the new employee training and review documents for the project.
